Description: The Eberhard Center on the Grand Rapids campus of Grand Valley State University will be the site of a statewide energy conservation conference on Friday, November 16th from 8:00a.m. – 6:00p.m.

This conference is meant to create a venue for substantive conversations and to stimulate information sharing, collaboration, and practical problem-solving on critical issues before the state and nation.

Keynote speakers include Dr. Marty Kushler from the American Council on an Energy Efficient Economy and Paul Meierdierck, Co-Chair of the Energy Committee of the New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability. Panelists include college administrators, engineers, city energy manager, state government officials, energy consultants, and faculty. Rep.Vern Ehlers, sponsor of the recently introduced “Higher Education Sustainability Act” has been invited to give introductory remarks. The event will be highly interactive.

Solar Photovoltaic Electric Technology Students will gain a more in-depth understanding of the components that make up a Photovoltaic (PV) electric system and how PV works. Participants will learn how to: define a load analysis, site selection, energy efficiency measures, techniques, and system sizing.

Instructor Mark Bauer of Bauer Power is experienced in renewable energy system design, sales, and installation of solar electric and wind generators.

The class will break for lunch for approximately one hour. Students are responsible for their own lunches.

Description: Steve Kahl, refuge manager of the Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge of Saginaw County, will present a program on the many endangered and threatened bird species on the refuge.

The program is sponsored by the Saginaw Valley Audubon Society and will be at 7:00 pm on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 at the Green Point Environmental Learning Center at 3010 Maple Street, Saginaw.

Shiawassee NWR is designated a U.S. "Important Bird Area" and one of the top destinations for birders in the Midwest. Steve will describe many of the thousands of ducks, shorebirds, wading and grassland birds.

Description: November 28 Community Meeting on Dow Corrective Action Work

The Department of Environmental Quality and The Dow Chemical Company will be holding the next quarterly Midland/Saginaw/Bay City (Tri-Cities) Dioxin Community Meeting on Wednesday, November 28, at the Horizons Conference Center in Saginaw located at 6200 State Street. The meeting is open to the public and will run from 6:30 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. Staff from the DEQ, Department of Community Health, and Dow, with their consultants, will be available one-half hour before and one-half hour
after the meeting for individual discussion with the public. Maps and other handout materials will be available for viewing and discussion.

Agenda items for the November 28 meeting include: Upper and Middle
Tittabawassee River investigation work status and DEQ oversight
comments; the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA), removal actions in the Tittabawassee and Saginaw
Rivers and EPA/DEQ oversight comments; an update on the Michigan State University Ecological Study; and an update on the Natural Resource Damage Assessment. The final hour of the meeting is set aside for questions and discussion on these and other topics.
